Local LifestyleSituated at the edge of an Atlantic sea-loch, the Boathouse needs a septic tank for waste disposal and so there is advice available in the Guest information book on how to be sensitive to the environment in that regard. And, of course, guests are careful not to leave on lights and appliances unnecessarily - happily the underfloor warming gives the Boathouse a good energy rating - 'D'. Our refuse and recycling bins are at the top of the hill and guests all seem to master the discipline of regular drop-offs there. Unfortunately glass still has to be taken to a bottle bank in Portree or Uig. We have a wider selection now of independent stores offering a good range of local produce. These include - Fish - 'Just Hooked' supplies many hotels and is sited on the industrial estate behind the Co-Op; our other main supplier of fish is Angus's van, which is in the Co-Op car park on Tuesday and Friday mornings and all day (until 4 pm) on Thursday. Deli - on Portree's main street, Wentworth Street, we have 'Relish Deli' which has amazing seafood from the local boats - langoustines, scallops and sometimes lobster. The smoked venison and specialist cheeses are also great. And, for a very easy supper, the home-made lasagne or fajitas are highly recommended. Meat - our butcher, Lochalsh Butchers, has relocated to a spot on the Dunvegan Road, in the Howden car park. His fillet steak is top class as is the haggis! Bread - as well as the baker in Portree's Somerled Square, there is an artisan baker, just a few steps from the butcher; that baker has also a wide range of gluten-free products and spelt bread - and upstairs from his coffee shop is a really good arrange of West Highland gifts - including Harris Tweed. So good to see Scottish gifts with no tat in sight! Greengrocer - on the first estate on the left as we enter Portree from here, there is the wholesale grocer, MacLeod's, who supplies all the hotels; they are also happy for non-trade customers to wander in and snoop around and choose freshly-delivered products. Guests will probably not need the services of Carole's Flowers or Skye Linen Services Laundry, who provide essential services and supplies for me!
